Other upcoming events include:

  • Tuesday, October 6 (7 pm) Wet plate photography: History & Resurgence in the 21st Century presented by Lisa Elmaleh (FB, Zoom). This discussion focuses on the history of wet plate technique and its resurgence and place in modern photography. • Tuesday, October 20 (7 pm) Big Band Jazz in Black West Virginia presented by Christopher Wilkinson (FB, Zoom). The coal fields of West Virginia would seem an unlikely market for big band jazz during the Great Depression. However, a prosperous African American audience of coal-industry workers created a rich audience for jazz tours. Black Mountaineers flocked to dances by the hundreds to hear bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Andy Kirk, Jimmie Lunceford, and Chick Webb.
  • Wednesday, October 21 (7 pm) October Old-Time Round Robin! (FB, Zoom). Listen to Old-Time master artists perform from home as they swap tunes and stories.
  • Thursday, October 22 (7:30 pm) October Old-Time Open Jam with Rachel Eddy & Emily Hammond (FB, Youtube). Join Rachel and Emily in a virtual open jam!
  • Friday, October 23 (7 pm) October Old-Time Song and Tune Swap! (FB, Zoom). Old-time players the world over are invited to swap songs, tunes, stories, and memories in an interactive and informal house party.
  • Tuesday, November 17 (7 pm) Dance & Social Justice presented by Laurie Goux (FB, Zoom). Laurie will share stories and history about the role that dance has played in social justice movements around the US and the wider world.
  • December 1 (10:30 am) A Song, a Story and a Cheese: Growing up Swiss in Helvetia, West Virginia presented by Bruce Betler (FB, Zoom). Bruce Betler (now Pater Otto) will share his unique knowledge of the connections between his hometown of Helvetia, WV and Switzerland. From linguistic turns of phrase and foodways to the songs sung and stories told during his youth in Helvetia, Bruce will give interesting perspective and insight into beloved Helvetian traditions.
