If you like to fish, Upshur County offers great musky, bass and trout fishing along the Buckhannon River. This river has 36 miles of flat to Class I rapids. The WV State Wildlife Center is located here and is the home of French Creek Freddie, WV’s own groundhog forecaster. Upshur was founded by the Pringle Brothers who were deserters from the English Army during the Revolutionary War era. They hid out for a while in a hollow of a sycamore tree and one can visit this site now graced by the “grandson” of the original tree. Upshur County is also a location for one of the Civil War trails in WV. It also is fortunate to be the home of WV Wesleyan College. There are two galleries/art instruction sites here: Artistry on Main in Buckhannon and Art of Eden Gallery in Kanawha Head.
